The Basque Museum is joining the Aste Nagusia festival celebrations by offering free admission to everyone from 22 to 30 August. Over this period, the museum invites locals and visitors alike to discover its revamped museum displays and enjoy an exhibition programme that brings together tradition and contemporary art.
As well as exploring the semi-permanent exhibition, which introduces the public to Basque history, heritage and culture, visitors will be able to discover two temporary exhibitions on display together at the museum this summer.
On the one hand, “Uhinak” by the artist Ra Asensi, installed in the Kukula space, offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the Basque Museum collection through a sculptural installation that reflects on memory, heritage and the voices of women linked to the Basque pottery tradition.
On the other hand, the cloister is hosting the “Giants of Bilbao” exhibition, dedicated to one of the city’s most cherished traditions. During the Aste Nagusia festival, the exhibition becomes even more special, as every morning the giants will set off from the Basque Museum to parade through the streets of the Old Town on their traditional kalejira street parade. After the kalejira, they will return to the museum’s cloister, where visitors will be able to see them again for the rest of the day. Visitors will also be able to see another generation of giants at the San Francisco de Bilbao archaeological site (C/ Conde Mirasol, 2).
Through this initiative, the Basque Museum aims to invite everyone to experience the Aste Nagusia festival from the heart of the Old Town, enjoying a space that connects heritage, contemporary creation and some of Bilbao’s most iconic traditions.
