Doors of the Bilbao Consulate Archive

Doors of the Bilbao Consulate Archive

Double doors made of solid wood carved with carved panels. They were built to provide access to the premises of the Bilbao Consulate Archive, located in the building adjoining the Church of San Antón, which also housed the Town Hall. This building was demolished in 1895 to make way for the present-day Calle de la Ribera and to connect it directly with Atxuri.

The front face is gilded and carved with floral motifs, while the rear is painted white. It features a cut-out iron keyhole in the shape of a double-headed eagle topped by a crown, as well as a knob with a latch.

The Bilbao Consulate was a commercial institution established in 1511 and abolished in 1829. It brought together merchants, transporters and shipmasters from the town, and was responsible for regulating and controlling maritime trade, exercising exclusive jurisdiction and being governed by its own body of law set out in its Ordinances.
