Model of a bonito boat

Model of a bonito boat

A 1:15 scale reproduction of an open bonito boat, known as a txalupa haundi, rigged with two triple masts and lug sails. These were the main deep-sea fishing vessels built in Basque shipyards, gradually disappearing with the introduction of steamships.

Used both for bonito trolling and for coastal sea bream fishing, the vessel was equipped with oars, used for manoeuvring and for entering and leaving the harbour.

The model depicts the Goizeko Izarra, registered in the port of Ondarroa (Bizkaia), and was built at Astilleros Euskalduna, Bilbao, in 1924.
