Oil on canvas depicting the falua or gondola of the Bilbao Consulate, an institutional vessel used by the authorities for jurisdictional visits along the estuary and for the town’s religious and festive celebrations.
The painting features a cartouche identifying the vessel depicted as the gondola commissioned by the Consulate prior to the construction of the town hall, which began in 1675.
The authorship of this work is attributed to the Bilbao painter Francisco Bustrín, according to research by Domingo Guzmán in his work El Consulado de Bilbao (1979). However, identifying the artist presents historiographical complexities due to the existence of several artists with the same surname—Francisco, Nicolás and Miguel Gregorio—who were active and associated with the Bilbao Consulate between the 17th and 18th centuries. According to the historian Javier Viar, this is the first known oil painting with a Bilbao theme and the foundational piece of local iconography produced by a native artist.
